A float tank, also known as a sensory deprivation or isolation cabin, is filled with a super concentration of Epsom salt, allowing you to float easily and effortlessly on the water’s surface. Float therapy frees you from the effects of gravity, your body is weightless – joints and muscles can truly relax, all tension melts away. No longer needing to process sensory input, your brain and nervous system begin to fall into a deep, meditative state.
Each session ranges from 30–90 minutes long. Once you are in the float cabin, you’ll hear the sound of waves, as well as see colored lights. Then, all sound and lights are eliminated, and you float into deep relaxation. At the end of the session, gentle sound and light effects are reintroduced to let you know the session is ending.

History of Float Therapy
Floating on highly salt-saturated water is not new – thousands of visitors travel to the famous Dead Sea between Israel and Jordan seeking medical treatment and relaxation. Our float cabins offer the same salinity and buoyancy. A Krysus isolation cabin contains about 2/3 of water and 1/3 of pure Epsom salt – roughly 850 pounds of salt, ten times as salty as the ocean!
Many of us are deficient in magnesium, an important mineral that supports bone and nervous system health. Symptoms of low magnesium include fatigue and muscle cramps, and if untreated, can lead to serious medical complications. While it’s important to include plenty of magnesium-rich foods in your diet, absorbing the magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) found in the float cabin will help increase your levels, detoxifying the body.
How Float Therapy Works
The temperature of the water is 93.5 degrees Fahrenheit, the average external temperature of the body. This means the mind does not distinguish between where the body ends and the water begins, a level of tactile sensory deprivation that is nearly impossible to replicate. As you float, pain and tension fall away, positive endorphins are released, and stress hormone levels drop.
While the benefits of floatation therapy for pain relief, injury recovery, muscle and joint soreness, and stress are clear, studies are ongoing exploring the effects of gravity reduction (floating) and sensory deprivation on a wide variety of conditions. Patients with fibromyalgia, a debilitating condition with few remedies, have reported reduced pain both during a session and over the course of a series of sessions. Sensory deprivation can also be a huge relief to people with autism, since a difficulty filtering and processing sensory information is a major symptom.

One of the most exciting applications of float therapy, and a particular focus here at Krysus, is in treating PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Through gravity reduction and sensory deprivation, patients suffering from PTSD and other trauma-induced disorders can work through emotionally painful experiences without triggering a new wave of stress. The production of dopamine and decrease in cortisol help send the body a signal of safety and calmness. This can be life-changing for military veterans, those in tactical occupations, and other communities prone to traumatic stress.
Interestingly, EEG readings taken in studies on sensory deprivation, such as experienced in float cabins, have revealed an increased synchronicity of brainwave frequencies between our left and right hemispheres. Float therapy has the potential to enhance our problem solving and cognitive abilities, as well as our creativity. Anecdotal evidence abounds of creative breakthroughs, both in technical skill and inspiration, after a series of float sessions.
A float pod session is also the perfect environment to learn new information. There are no distractions from the body or external stimuli, setting the mind up to absorb information more deeply and retain it more completely. Students have used the deep “theta” state of relaxation produced in the isolation cabin to enhance memorization and language learning, as well as support hypnosis and visualization techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions
Floating is all about achieving a relaxed state. Avoiding or reducing things that increase nervousness or anxiety will help improve your experience.
Try to avoid or reduce caffeine, alcohol and drug intake in the 24 hours leading up to your session.
Eat a light meal 60 – 90 minutes prior to your session.
Avoid shaving or waxing as freshly shaved skin can lead to irritation.
We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes prior to your session start time.
Our staff will take you to your prep room to change into a robe and slippers. Once changed, you will be escorted to your float room. Each room is equipped with it’s own float tank and shower for your privacy.
You’ll start your session by showering, prior to entering the pod. Then, you’ll enter the tank in privacy. You may either close the lid or opt to leave it open if you are claustrophobic.
Once in the tank, simply lay still and relax. After exiting, you’ll shower once more to remove the salt and head to your prep room to re-dress.
Nothing but yourself! We provide everything you need for your session (towels, robes, earplugs, body wash/shampoo…)
Each float room is fully private. We recommend that you float nude, but you are welcome to bring a swimsuit if it makes you feel more comfortable.
Wear something that is comfortable and easy to change out of to the facility.
You can wear a bathing suit during your float, but often times our customers float nude. For some customers, wearing clothing can be a distraction from the float
experience. Ultimately, what you wear is based on your personal comfort level.
Each float tank is in a private room with a private shower.
There are very limited side effects to floating. The most common is irritated skin, especially for customers with freshly shaved/waxed skin or open cuts. Most floaters do not experience nausea or motion sickness, but on occasion some customers who are already prone to suffer from motion sickness may have this reaction to floating.
Float tanks are filled with such a high concentration of salt that the body automatically floats with no effort. Many customers achieve such a state of relaxation that they fall asleep while floating.
However, being under the influence of drugs, alcohol and/or medications with a sedative effect will increase the risk of drowning. People with uncontrolled disorders that may cause them to lose consciousness at any moment could also be at risk of drowning. See “Who should avoid float therapy?”
Customers with the following should re-consider scheduling their sessions:
- Those with incontinence not medically controlled
- Those with kidney or respiratory infections
- Those with infectious disease or contagious skin conditions
- Those with injuries or open cuts/wounds
- Those under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Those with dementia or Alzheimer’s not medically cleared
- Those with low or high blood pressure not medically cleared
- Those with diabetes not medically cleared
- Those who’ve received chemotherapy within the last 30 days and not medically
- Those who take medication(s) which magnesium from Epsom Salt can have
interactions with (e.g., certain antibiotics and muscle relaxants)
- Those with a condition which may be adversely affected by cutaneous absorption of magnesium
- Those experiencing a heavy menstrual period or external vaginal issues that
cannot be managed with a tampon or feminine cup
- Those with a history of heart trouble, schizophrenia, epilepsy, seizures or blackouts not medically cleared
- Those who’ve had any type of hair color/treatment within the last 14 days
- Those who’ve recently spray tanned where it is still easily washing off
- Those who’ve recently gotten a tattoo (less than 4 weeks old)
